Skyrac AC - Aireborough's foremost athletic club

Skyrac Athletic Club was formed in the '60s by Cyril Villiers, Eddie Hardy and Roy Martin and boasted a strong membership long before the running boom of more recent times.

Its name, Skyrac, is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word Skyrac, a 'wapentake' or meeting place, encompassing Guiseley, Otley and surrounding areas. It is described as 'a place where a given number of people met to train in the use of arms'. Later this would become a judicial area maintaining law and order.

It has participants in all disciplines of the sport - particularly true of the Junior section - and has someone competing in its striking green and gold vests almost every weekend. From local events to internationals Skyrac AC has seen much success over the years and its members continue to provide the kind of performances that make it one the area's premier athletic clubs.

Competing is only part of the Skyrac picture though and several high class events have been promoted over the years. Spear-heading these is the Chevin Fell Race, now in its 26th year, and attracting entries from across the region. A more recent addition is the Guiseley Gallop which has established itself well and continues to provide runners with an interesting and challenging course.

To further raise the profile of the club, championship cross-country events are regularly hosted on behalf of the promoting organisations and we are fortunate to have Nunroyd Park at our disposal for this purpose.

Athletics for leisure is also keenly supported by several members who find training in company more enjoyable and rewarding than 'the loneliness of the long-distance runner'.

Since its formation Skyrac has had several 'homes' but is now firmly established in the new, purpose built clubhouse on Nunroyd Park where new members will find a warm welcome.
