13 year old Dominique Odain-Hamilton from North Leeds is another young sprinter who has just signed for the Skyrac Athletic Club. Dominque who is a promising young sprinter will be training with the Skyrac Club this winter and is looking forward to making her debut on the indoor circuit in November and December.

Another young sprinter who has just signed for the Skyrac Athletic Club is 14 year old Muzzy Al-Moozany from the North Leeds area. Muzzy has also been training with the Skyrac Athletic Club at regular training sessions held at the South Leeds Stadium and Leeds Carnegie track. Muzzy who will be concentrating on the 60m sprints on the Indoor Circuit this winter is looking forward to representing the club.

SKYRAC JOIN ON CAMP WITH KELLY

Two members of Skyrac Athletic Club were invited to attend the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ training group which was held at Leeds Carnegie Metropolitan University last weekend.

The On Camp with Kelly organisation is run by Dame Kelly Holmes MBE and its initiative is to invite promising young talented athletes and coaches for a mentoring weekend. Skyracs Laura Kirk a former England International 800m runner and former England and Great Britain athlete and Performance Coach Andrew Medley spent the weekend with athletes and coaches from all over the country developing new ideas on circuit training and aqua jogging, to include rehab drills. Workshops were also attended on Strength and Conditioning, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Acclimatisation & Hydration.

Kelly Holmes stressed the importance of correct training from an early age and also that athletes would only get out of athletics what they themselves put into athletics.

The Skyrac pair discussed with Dame Kelly the successful season the Skyrac Track and Field team have had and the development of the Junior section at the club. Kelly Holmes congratulated the pair and wished the Skyrac Athletic Club a very successful 2009 season and said she would be keeping a lookout for the Skyrac junior results.

Laura Kirk who had a very successful 2008 season is aiming to run very close to 2minutes for the 800m for the Skyrac club within the next 2 seasons and Kelly Holmes wished Laura all the best.

September has been a good month for the Skyrac Track and Field team where the club has signed up 4 very talented young athletes for next seasons track and field competitions. The four athletes have been training at regular track sessions held at the South Leeds Stadium over the last month. Another three athletes will also be signing for the Skyrac Track and Field team during October for the start of the Indoor Track season.

New recruit Jordan Bransberg from North Leeds stated yesterday "I'm very impressed with the Skyrac setup, the training sessions will help my development as an athlete and I'm looking forward to competing for my new club on the Indoor circuit this winter".

SKYRAC ATHLETES IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT SQUADS

Skyrac Athletic Club would like to congratulate 2 of our fine young athletes who have been selected to train with the England Athletics Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Development Squads based at the EIS, Sheffield.

Charlotte James who competes in the under 17 age group has been selected for her fine performances over 300m this season. This is Charlottes second consecutive season with this squad.

Andrew Ettenfield has been selected for his fine performances this season with the Javelin. Andrew has had some fine performances this year in the under 15 Boys age group.

Skyrac Athletic Club works in partnership with England Athletics to develop up and coming talented young athletes in the North Leeds region.


Manchester 26th August 2008

Two Skyrac middle distance athletes made the short journey to Longford Park Stadium, Manchester on Tuesday 26th August 2008. Skyracs Laura Kirk from Guiseley ran her best 800m time for over 3 years in placing 3rd in a mixed 800m race in a time of 2min 11.61 secs. Laura who is just 21 years has only a couple of races left this season and is still hopeful for a 2min 09sec performance by the close of the season.

Chris Thornton ran in the Mens 800m race and placed 4th with a time of 2min 02.66sec.

Skyracs Harriett gets Yorkshire call up

Skyrac Athletic Clubs promising young middle distance athlete, 14 year old Harriett Middlebrough from Guiseley has been selected to run for Yorkshire at this weekends Northern Inter Counties Athletics meeting being held at Costello Stadium, Hill. Harriett this year has run some fast 800m races which ranks her as one of the fastest promising 800m runners in Yorkshire for her age group. Harriett has been a member of the Skyrac club for over 4 years. Harriett who attends The Girls Grammar School, Bradford is looking forward to competing for her County in the Swedish Relay where she will be running the anchor leg over 600m. A spokesman for the Skyrac club stated "This is the fifth consecutive year that Skyrac has had athletes running for the Yorkshire team and we congratualte Harriett on her selection".

Skyrac Athletic Club is celebrating this weekend after the clubs Junior & Senior Track and Field team won promotion into Division 3 of the Northern Track and Field League.

A great effort by all our athletes, coaches, officials and all our helpers. A big thank you and well done to all. Details of our celebration evening will be displayed shortly.

Track & Field League 2008

The West Yorkshire Track & Field League 2008 season starts on Sunday 20th April with the first meeting being held at York commencing at 1:00 p.m.

Skyrac athletes are reminded they MUST have entered 10 days in advance for this meeting. Entry forms for the remaining 6 meetings can be collected from the coaches on our main training nights. Any Skyrac athlete requiring transportation to York please contact the coaches at the clubhouse. Club colours MUST be worn at these meetings.

The second meeting will be held at Thornes Park, Wakefield on Wednesday 7th May commencing at 6:45 p.m. Timetables of all events are displayed on the club noticeboard.

The Yorkshire County Athletic Track and Field Championships take place at the Don Valley International Stadium, Sheffield on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May 2008. Any Skyrac athlete requiring transportation to Sheffield please contact the club coaches on training nights.

Any Senior Skyrac athletes who wish to enter the Yorkshire Womens 5000m or Mens 10000m Track Championships to be held at Leeds Carnegie on Wednesday 14th May entry forms are available at the clubhouse (Entries close May 9th).

Any Skyrac athlete who wishes to enter the British Milers Club 800m and 1500m at the meeting at Leeds Carnegie on 14th May 2008 or the Open Races for 800m and 1500m athletes please contact amedley.yorkshireathletics@ntlworld.com.

Finally any Skyrac athletes who require to attend the Open Meetings held at Trafford AC (Manchester) at Trafford Athletic Stadium on Tuesday 6th May or Tuesday 20th May please contact the Skyrac coaches who have further information. Transportation can be arranged for any of these meetings.

Yorkshire Vice President,s Funeral

On Thursday 10th April 2008 Skyrac Athletic Club was represented by Mr Andrew Medley and Mr Gordon Agar at the funeral of Frank Gledhill, the Yorkshire Championship Secretary and the Yorkshire Vice President. The service was held at Huddersfield Crematorium.

Skyrac Athletic Club appreciated the hard work and true sportsmanship that Frank Gledhill showed to past and present members of our club over many years. The club sends their sincere condolences to Franks family and friends within the Athletic World.

Northern League Club Knock out competition

Skyrac Athletic Club have been drawn against the following clubs in the Northern League Club Knock out competition to be held at Blackpool on Sunday 17th August 2008. Skyrac will be competing against 6 of the following clubs - Bingley Harriers, Blackburn Harriers, Blackpool Wyre & Flyde, City of Manchester, City of York, Holmfirth Harriers, Lancaster & Morecombe/Kendal AAC, Leigh Harriers, Liverpool Harriers, Oldham & Royton, Pudsey & Bramley, Southport Waterloo and Trafford AC.

Will all Skyrac athletes please note the date of this Cup Competition, if you are on holiday or are unable to compete please advise the coaches at the club as soon as possible.

Guiseley Gallop

The 13th Guiseley Gallop will be held on Easter Sunday 23rd March at 10.30am from the West Side Retail Park, Guiseley.

The race which will follow its traditional route, including along the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath and through Esholt Village, has grown in popularity over the years and in 2007 had nearly 500 finishers.

There will be a generous prize list in 5 year categories.

The 2008 event will see its furthest ever entry because Karen Nichol and husband who live in Adelaide, Australia have entered the race and will make it a family affair by running with John Bolton, Karen's father, who lives in York. Karen is currently training in temperatures of 30 degrees C in Adelaide and so Peter Rawnsley, the Gallop organiser, is arranging some especially warm weather for race day.

REGISTRATION

This is an important message about Athlete registration with England Athletics - If you ignore it you may lose your right to compete after 31/1/08.


Skyrac Athletic Club are now required to register our athletes and volunteers with England Athletics and the deadline of 31st January 2008 is fast approaching.

All Skyrac athletes are reminded that all subs are now due. On receipt of monies Skyrac AC will issue your England Athletics Competition Licence and membership cards. All data will be stored for internal athletics purposes only.

Without registration you will not be able to compete in any UK athletics sponsored events, including leagues, county, regional and national championships. Skyrac Athletic Club will not register athletes whose subs are not upto date!

Skyrac Athletic Club is celebrating with the selection of three of their young and promising athletes who have been selected to compete for the Yorkshire County Cross Country team at the Inter County Championships to be held at Nottingham during March.

Jaye Riley, who attends Tadcaster Grammar School will be competing in the u13 Girls team, Harriet Middlebrough, who attends The Girls Grammar School Bradford is named as a reserve for the u15 team, and Rebecca Harrison who attends Menston St Marys School will be in the u17 Womens team. All three girls have been loyal members of the Skyrac Athletic Club since the day they started running.

Competing at the Northern Athletics Indoor Championships at the EIS, Sheffield - making her debut for Skyrac - 16 year old Hannah Seddon who attends Garforth 6th Form College ran in the u20 400m. Hannah who specialises in the 800m and 1500m ran the 400m in 63.4 secs (from the tight lane one position).

In the Senior Men 800m race Nic Howard from Horsforth and who is studying at Birmingham University ran 1min 59secs.

This weekend sees Skyrac athletes competing at the Northern Cross Country Championships at Temple Newsome, Leeds and others are competing at the u15 and u17 Northern Indoor Championships at the EIS, Sheffield.

Skyrac Athletic Club have a particularly strong Masters (Vets) section (male & female), and a very promising young team of elite athletes, the average age is coming down as younger members are joining monthly. The committee are keen to welcome all keep-fit enthusiasts no matter their standards. We are confident that we can match all newcomers with a club member who is equally as fast (or as slow) as you require.

Skyrac are determined to extend their membership and profile in the coming years and to recapture their glory days of previous years.

Guests are always welcome! Please join us on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at 7:20 p.m. at the Clubhouse Nunroyd Park, Yeadon. The club also uses the facilities at the local 8 lane synthetic track at Leeds Carnegie University on several nights of the week. The club are keen to incorporate fun into the training. This extends through out training to the various social and fun events organised throughout the year.

Members participate throughout the year in team competitions ranging from Track and Field, Cross Country, Road running, Fell running, Trail through to full Marathon and athletes have represented the club as far a field as New York and Brisbane.

A warm welcome is assured to all 'would be' runners / joggers, therefore, please come along and find out more from the new members themselves.
